Thieves πππ
Pro tip!
Open a bottle of Thieves next time you chop onions and say goodbye to the burning and tears! You can also diffuse Thieves nearby for the same results.
When you slice an onion with a knife, you release amino acid sulfoxides, which then form sulfenic acids. These sulfenic acids then mix with enzymes (which formerly were kept separate) from the onion, creating and emitting an annoying chemical irritant called syn-propanethial-S-oxide (say that five times fast). This irritant stimulates the lachrymal glands in the eyes, causing them to gush tears and possibly feel a burning sensation.

Eucalyptus πππ
Bronchopneumonia is a type of lung infection that causes inflammation and small areas of pus in the airways and surrounding lung tissue. It is caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections and is particularly harmful to children under age five. A case study reported the effects of steam inhalation using eucalyptus EO a child aged 4.5 years old hospitalized for bronchopneumonia. Steam inhalation of eucalyptus EO was performed one to two times daily for 10 to 15 minutes each session. After performing the steam inhalation three times during a 24-hour period the child experienced significant improvements: reduced cough frequency, improved expulsion of airway mucus, and overall better airway clearance.

Please note that eucalyptus EO should be used very cautiously with children aged 3-5, and it is generally recommended to use milder oils for children under 3, such as lemon and frankincense. In sensitive children, eucalyptus inhalation can reduce respiratory rate. For more information, see my book Medicinal Essential Oils.
