In the mythology of the Kapampangan people, Mayari is the goddess of the moon. According to legend, after the death of the supreme god Bathala, a conflict erupted between Mayari and her brother Apolaki, the sun god, over who would rule the world. During the fight, Mayari was blinded in one eye. Apolaki, regretting his actions, agreed to rule with her but at different times. This is why the moonlight is dimmer than the sun.
