Sam's Yard Maintenance

Found all my grandmother's doilies in a box marked "church basement, 1987" at my aunt's estate sale. Thirty-seven pieces of lace she'd crocheted over sixty years, each one taking weeks of work, sitting in a cardboard box next to broken Christmas lights and empty picture frames. Nobody wanted them. The estate sale lady said she'd throw them out at the end of the day if they didn't sell.

I took them all home and cried for three hours. My grandmother spent her whole life making beautiful things that nobody thought were worth keeping. She died in a nursing home where I didn't visit enough, convinced her work didn't matter, that she hadn't left anything behind that mattered.

Started cutting up old jeans because I needed to do something with my hands, needed to create something that would prove she mattered. Sewed her lace onto denim squares, each doily preserved exactly as she made it but transformed into something people might actually use. It took me four months. My hands cramped. I cried over every piece. The quilt is enormous and imperfect and I've never made anything I'm more proud of.
Posted it on Tedooo app not because I wanted to sell it but because I needed people to see what she'd made, needed proof that her work was valuable. Got two hundred messages in three days. People sharing stories about their own grandmothers' forgotten crafts, asking if I could make quilts from their family lace. Started a whole shop on there now, charging enough to honor the work that goes into each piece.
My grandmother's doilies aren't trash in a church basement anymore. They're art. And maybe that doesn't fix the visits I didn't make or the time we didn't have, but it means something. It means her hands mattered, her work mattered, she mattered.!!!

Turned empty plastic bottles and old containers into quirky wall faces! 😄 😁
