The Silent Killer in Poultry Farming That Often Goes Unnoticed 🐓 💧
One of the most overlooked challenges in layer chicken production is not always disease—it is often management-related issues.
For many poultry farmers, especially those new to the industry, sudden mortality can occur due to something as simple as a clogged ni**le drinker. When a drinker line stops supplying water and the problem is not detected immediately, birds can become dehydrated within a short period, particularly during hot weather conditions.
After discussions with several poultry producers and clients, a practical management approach has been suggested:
👍 All vitamins, supplements, and medications are administered through hanging waterers.
👍 Water supplied through PVC pipelines and ni**le drinker systems remains plain drinking water only.
The rationale behind this practice is that certain supplements and medications may leave residues inside water lines. Without proper flushing and maintenance, these residues can contribute to blockages in ni**le drinkers and pipelines, reducing water availability to the flock.
At RTL Layer Chicken, we are currently observing and evaluating the effectiveness of this management practice under actual farm conditions. Regular inspection of water lines, ni**le drinkers, and water flow remains essential to maintaining flock health, performance, and egg production.
