Self-portraiture is especially helpful when we engage children as it is not only about art, technique, and materials, but about self-discovery.

Our children’s recent interest in how there are different doctors for different body needs (which is in turn a follow-up of their superhero project) has led to rediscovery of body parts.

These past few days, loose parts have helped our children face their faces! They’ve been very conscious of their eyes, ears, and definitely the number of their teeth (and even where they imagine their neurotransmitters to be!).

It’s a combination of self-awareness, resourcefulness, and imaginativeness!

Looking for a preschool or playschool for your child that not only gets them ready for Kinder and "big school" but actually honors them as already-capable citizens, and helps them learn in developmentally-appropriate ways?

Send us a message to book a free trial. We offer 930AM-12NN classes as well as 130-4PM classes for 2-4 year olds.

Holly was one of our students. She graduated from us in 2025. Just last April, she already graduated from her Kinder school - where she adjusted with so much joy and friendliness, as well as readiness to learn more.

Building Blocks of Math

Two boys -C, 4. and S, 5 - were playing with Duplo blocks during free play.

S said he was building such a “tall, ancient tower. It’s been here for a long time!” explaining to us what he knew by the word “ancient.”

C followed suit and built his own tower, too.

S began comparing and said, “My tower is the tallest!”

C tried to catch up. At some point, S’ tower became unstable. It fell.

C now said, “Mine is the tallest!”

And so it went, back and forth, one child’s tower falling, and the other’s becoming the taller one.

Teacher tried to push the line of inquiry and added his own tower, and tried to introduce the concepts of “taller” and “tallest.” The two boys had an "AHA!" moment. They combined their Duplo towers and “defeated” teacher’s wooden tower with their combined taller one.

These may seem like simple block play conversations that we might have heard one time or another. However, in determining which is taller (or tallest), or as they engaged in friendly competition, the kids were learning not only comparative and superlative language, but also mathematics concepts of comparison (more vs. less), and the ingenious idea of putting together their blocks on their own to make it more than another entity.

We are always reminded by the kids that when we are attentive enough and remember the science behind the play, academics and play are never opposites.

Soil as a loose part? Why not?

We've always made a point to say on our page (and whenever we can, to our kids and their parents) that "messy hands are learning hands!" This is something our Directress-Pedagogista, Teacher Bianca always says.

When it comes to soil, younger kids get to have the sensorial needs fulfilled. They also get to practice their fine motor. It can also be a venue for mark-making. These are all preparations for writing!

Older kids not only have the added benefit of fine motor practice. They also get to ask more questions and search for answers about our world.

Moreover, they explore more of our world, how it runs, growth, and how soil is the literal thing on which many things stand.

Treating soil as a loose part allows children to explore, discover, learn and have fun without pre-set agenda. It also allows them to combine this with other loose parts for more creative exercises, too.

Send us a message to learn more about how we do play with loose parts and what it means for children!

Thinking of preschool/playschool as a way to prepare your child? The best way is to play!

To really play. To really go deep into their interests. To have a developmentally-appropriate pedagogy. To be in an environment where teachers study the latest science in play and how it helps us learn - even the academics! - showing that there really should be no separation between play and the "serious learning," and where children have the capacity to drive their own lines of inquiry to learn.

Send us a message if you want to learn more. Current school year runs until June 19, so we are still accepting applicants.

Discover all the wonder of a Reggio-inspired school, where the children are considered teachers, and so is the environment they're in. Where teachers invite to play, are prepared to guide the children to their next developmental leap, but always ready to step back and let the children lead them, too.

Send us a message if you want to learn more. We're located at Aspen Condominium, Filinvest Corporate, City, Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Last week, our Boogie Bears Class (the afternoon class) went on field work.

They went to Homebase Cafe .ph , our favorite cafe-resto just outside of Play Patch, on the ground floor of Bristol Condominium.

It has been one of our parents’ and teachers’ favorite hangout places. They serve great coffee, yummy food, and have been so supportive of us.

That is why when the Boogie Bears continued their research work into restaurants, we didn’t go too far anymore.

The kids got to experience the whole process: from taking the orders (of their parents, teachers, and real customers who happened to pass by!) , making the drink and cooking the food, and even receiving and giving money at the register.

This is all part of their long-term project into food, which now seems to be sharpening toward restaurants.

We still have slots for this class, before it ends in June. Send us a message!

Different teachers have gone to the freezer looking for ice, and were surprised to find frozen wonders!

Our Atelierista, Teacher Rai was the witness to how different children, at different times, on their own, would ask to freeze the paint they produced and used in different containers.

Our freezer is in the Atelier area, so it was near enough for them to follow this curiosity. There was easy Access.

More than the access, the kids were also finding their own Agency. They were empowered to follow up on their own lines of inquiry. They felt safe and encouraged enough by Teacher Rai to push on with their curiosities.

Each child had his/her own product, inquiry, and moment, discovering their power and the wonders of their discoveries in their own ways.

Where and when do we learn to dream? When we play!

Pretending for us is not just an activity, but packed with power. It not only incorporates how children make sense of their world, how they can exhibit care and concern for others (especially in the case of medical make-believe), but also the way by which children can learn that they can in fact solve problems and contribute to their community.

Let us know if you'd like to learn more about how we believe in the power of "make-believe" at Play Patch. Join our classes. A free trial is also still available.
