World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day – May 8, 2026

Every May 8, we celebrate World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, a global occasion that honors the humanitarian principles of compassion, unity, and service to humanity.

This date was chosen to mark the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant (1828), founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. His vision continues to inspire millions of volunteers and staff worldwide who dedicate themselves to protecting life, alleviating suffering, and upholding human dignity.

This year’s theme: "United in Humanity" celebrates the volunteers and staff who stand alongside communities in times of crisis — not as outsiders, but as part of them. In an increasingly complex and divided world, they turn compassion into action, offering hope, dignity, and support when it matters most.

The idea for World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day came after the First World War, when leaders at the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross envisioned “an annual action that could take hold in the whole world a major contribution to peace.”

Today, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the world’s largest humanitarian network, comprising 191 National Societies working together to save lives, build community resilience, strengthen localization, and promote dignity around the world.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is both a tribute to their unwavering commitment and a solemn moment to remember those who have lost their lives in service of others. It is also a call to uphold and protect humanitarian action, ensuring that neutral, independent, and impartial support continues to reach those most in need, wherever they are.

Let us honor those who serve, celebrate our volunteers, and reaffirm our shared responsibility to humanity.
