The Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas would like to remind the public that white and yellow onions sold in the local public and private markets are illegally smuggled and have not undergone sanitary and phytosanitary inspection by the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI).

The country currently has limited supply of white or yellow onions. Meanwhile, the DA has not issued Sanitary and Phytosanitary Import Clearance (SPSIC) to import fresh onions as of to date based on the Memorandum issued by the DA-Bureau of Plant Industry dated November 25, 2022.

These undocumented commodities or smuggled products accessible in the local markets could pose health hazards to consumers and threaten the local industry.
