Good news for small-scale growers in Wales! 🥬

In January 2026 the Welsh Government will be rolling out their flagship Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), which will replace the area-based Basic Payment Scheme in Wales.
LWA Cymru have been working hard to make the scheme more accessible for small-scale growers, and we are very pleased to have final confirmation at this year's Royal Welsh Show that the SFS will include a non-area-based eligibility criteria, to open the scheme up to farms or market gardens under 3 hectares which can prove a minimum '550 labour-hours worked per annum'.
This is a promising step forward in recognising the productivity of small-scale horticulture and the public goods that small farms and market gardens provide. However, payments will still be issued on a per-hectare basis, and we will be working with our members and policymakers in Wales to advocate for payment options which are more suitable for smaller-scale enterprises.
