Applications for euthanasia have surged 44% in three years.
New Ministry of Health figures show new applications have climbed from 807 in 2022/23 to 1,164 in 2025/26.
Now the ACT Party wants to expand eligibility even further.
Instead of even suggesting a loosening of the law, shouldn't New Zealand first ask why demand is rising—and whether every person is receiving the care, support, and palliative treatment they need? Because we know they are not.
Real healthcare should always offer hope not death by lethal injection.

486 New Zealanders died by euthanasia last year. The ACT Party wants more.
The Ministry of Health has revealed 486 assisted deaths between April 2025 and March 2026—the highest number since the law came into force.
At the same time, ACT is pushing a Bill that would:
• Expand eligibility.
• Force healthcare providers to permit euthanasia on their premises.
• Weaken existing safeguards.
Instead of making it easier to end lives, New Zealand should be making it easier to access quality palliative care.
Compassion means better care—not a quicker death.
