Yesterday, new requirements from the Electricity Authority came into effect, requiring large power companies to offer time of use pricing to households and small businesses.

That means more Kiwis now have access to plans where the price you pay varies depending on when you use electricity. Running the dishwasher, washing machine or charging your EV overnight could save you more than using them during the 5pm to 9pm peak.

For solar owners, this helps level the playing field. Time of use plans have been available for a while, but making them a required option means more households can choose a plan that better suits how they generate and use power. Using more of your electricity during the day while your solar is producing can reduce the amount you need to buy from the grid, and if you have a battery, you can store that energy and use it during the more expensive evening peak.
