I think a lot of people find the lit review one of the hardest parts of a thesis - they are certainly often harder to read. This makes a literature review sound simple!
A lot of researchers treat the literature review like a book report, just listing who said what.
That’s not enough.
A strong literature review makes a case for your study by showing what’s missing, what’s unclear, or what needs to be tested again.
It’s about guiding the reader to see the problem you’re trying to solve.
For example, if several studies on online learning show mixed results about student performance, you can argue that more focused research is needed on specific conditions or groups.
That kind of reasoning gives your study a clear reason to exist.
Your literature review should tell a story that ends with this message: “Here’s where I come in.”
