🏡 No doubt you’ve heard about the big changes for granny flats in NZ!
📜 New rules mean standalone, single-storey granny flats up to 70m² can be built without a full building consent, if strict conditions are met.
⚠️ This is a big step toward making transportable homes faster and simpler to deliver — but it’s not a free-for-all. For example:
✔️ The homes must be built by Licensed Building Practitioners.
✔️ The homes must fully comply with the NZ Building Code.
✔️ Councils still need to be notified before and after construction.
✔️ You may still need a resource consent or onsite covenants still apply.
✔️ Owners remain responsible for water, wastewater, and service connections.
✔️A development contribution might apply through the project information
memorandum (PIM) process.
🤝 In short: the process is streamlined, but the responsibilities haven’t disappeared.
