How are you integrating te reo Māori into your communication approach?
Respectful use of te reo Māori doesn’t require perfect fluency but demonstrates a commitment to cultural respect and understanding. Practices such as learning a kaikōhau or mihi, starting a kōrero with Māori phrases, taking your time to learn the lyrics of popular waiata, and reading more on tikanga Māori can go a long way in our interactions.
Embracing te reo Māori also supports whakawhanaungatanga, the Māori concept of building trust and genuine connections. By allowing space for people to express what’s in their hearts, we foster a deeper sense of respect and empathy in our communications and workplace interactions.
As the whakataukī says – ko te reo te taikura o te whakaaro marama, language is the key to understanding – using te reo Māori honours its role as a vibrant, living language. It helps build lasting and positive connections with diverse audiences. He waka eke noa, we’re all in this together, working towards a more inclusive and culturally aware communication landscape.

This year’s Construction Industry Survey, a collaborative effort between Teletrac Navman and Civil Contractors New Zealand, marks a milestone for us at BBR. We’ve worked on this annual survey for eight years, constantly evolving the questionnaire and resulting report. This year we’ve produced an interactive dashboard that breaks down data by region and business size.
The results are a wake-up call: 64 percent of businesses report a severe lack of work, highlighting the pressures facing an industry that is essential to maintaining New Zealand’s infrastructure.
Findings from this year’s survey were cited by Chris Hipkins, Leader of the Opposition, in his speech at the Local Government New Zealand Conference in Wellington. The report has also been referenced by leading economists and business publications.
For us at BBR, this survey is more than just data collection. It’s about keeping a close eye on the civil construction industry, making sure the voice of an industry that forms the backbone of the country is heard loud and clear by local and central government. We’re proud of our role in this project to support an industry that does such critical work for New Zealand.
