“Hilando libertad” is a program created by Patagonia Hecha a Mano, one of the our brands, which teaches the craft of spinning and weaving wool to the inmates of the men's prison in Punta Arenas, Chile.
The inmates voluntarily attend the workshops, in each class they are shown a different and honest way of earning a living, with the sale of their creations they receive financial compensation, and a virtuous circle is articulated.
The program gives them the opportunity to show them another reality, where they are able to work honestly and learn something new. As the inmates get involved in their roles, the transformation in them begins to occur, they don’t only learn a new craft and receive a salary, but the perception they have of themselves changes.
They realize that they are capable of creating, learning and helping their families financially while serving their prison term.
The wool with which they work is 100% natural from Patagonian sheep, it is a soft and white wool. The pieces are made by hand, the products are knitted by hand or on a weaving loom.
