"I saw him happy many times. He had a tendency toward depression, but he wasn’t depressed all the time. He communicated much of what he felt without speaking. I still vividly remember some of his expressions: anxious, amused, bored, angry, and thoughtful. His piercing blue eyes intensified every emotion he felt.

Although he struggled with depression and addiction, his darkness was directed inward. With other people, including me, he was caring and considerate. There’s no way to know for certain, but I’m sure he would still be an artist today, continuing to evolve. He hated repeating himself.

He was proud of the music he and his band created. He loved his daughter and was kind to his friends, especially to me.

One of Kurt’s greatest legacies is that he reinvented rock and roll by blending punk rock, heavy metal, and pop in a way that brought punk culture and music to a massive audience. He redefined masculinity in rock, challenging the stereotype of the macho frontman and offering an alternative: an artist who combined power and charisma with compassion and sensitivity.

Kurt had a sophisticated understanding of how to bring together every aspect of rock and roll. He was Nirvana’s lead singer and guitarist, wrote the music and lyrics, conceived the music videos, designed album covers, and made nearly every major decision for the band. In most rock groups, those responsibilities are shared among several members. Before Kurt, perhaps only Jimi Hendrix had carried so much creative control within a superstar band.

He personally oversaw every detail of Nirvana’s recordings. He designed album artwork, created ideas for merchandise, and developed concepts for the band’s music videos. His vision shaped every part of Nirvana’s identity."
