Healthnet TPO is a Dutch aid agency that restores and strengthens health care systems in areas disrupted by war or disaster. In these areas people are facing the immense task of rebuilding society while they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional consequences of conflict. By working on that together with local communities we use ‘health’ as a means to bring people together and to restore mutual trust. On this page we post updates about our project countries, colleagues and themes.

HealthNet TPO reaches isolated Arit Valley after the Afghanistan earthquake

On 31 August, a devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 2,200 people and leaving thousands without shelter, food, or healthcare. Entire villages were cut off, unreachable by road or even air.

Read the full testimony of Dr. Shahid and his team, who — when even helicopters could not land — chose to walk more than three hours through mountains and aftershocks, carrying medicines and supplies on their backs, to be the first to reach Arit Valley and bring help to cut-off villages.

Afghanistan Earthquake Emergency Response

Our teams continue to work around the clock in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.

- Nearly 1,000 people with injuries have been treated in our clinics and by mobile health teams.

- Six emergency teams are now deployed in the epicentre area of Nurgal district in Kunar province, with one additional team mobilised from Laghman province.

- Three teams mobilised to provide mental health and psychosocial services, focusing on women and children.

HealthNet TPO staff, many of whom are themselves part of the affected communities, are providing lifesaving care under extremely challenging conditions.

The needs remain immense. Remote villages have been reached but road access remains challenging since the roads have been damaged by the quake or covered in landslide. Your support is urgently needed to scale up our response.

Together, we can deliver lifesaving care and stand in solidarity with Afghan people during this crisis: https://healthnettpo.org/donate/
