AI isn't going to take an automation engineer out of work
I had a session with my students last week on HMI screen navigation, and it reminded me that small design choices can affect an entire operation.
HMI navigation is more than graphics and buttons. It directly impacts how operators monitor, control, and respond to live processes.
One mistake many beginners make is not knowing when to use Replace Display vs Overlay Display.
Replace Display switches away from the current screen.
Overlay Display keeps the main screen visible while showing extra controls or details.
If an operator needs to adjust settings or run diagnostics while still monitoring alarms and the live process, using the right navigation method matters. The wrong choice can cause confusion, missed alarms, delays, and downtime.
Good HMI design helps operators stay aware, respond faster, and work with confidence.
