My wife told me not to tell her mother that I'd lost my job.

She said her mom would panic, start asking questions, and make everything worse.

So for three months, every time her mother called, I pretended everything was normal.

Then one afternoon she showed up unannounced.

There I was, sitting in the living room at 11 a.m. on a weekday when I should have been at work. The moment she walked in and saw me, I knew the secret was finished.

She looked at me, glanced at the television, then looked back at me.

"Why aren't you at work?" she asked.

The room went silent.

Before I could answer, my wife jumped in and explained everything. She told her mother that I'd lost my job months earlier, that the market was tough, that I was applying everywhere, and that we'd kept it quiet because we didn't want anyone worrying.

I expected a lecture, concern or at least a dozen questions.

Instead, her mother listened patiently and asked me just one thing.

“Have you been getting up every morning and looking for work?”

I told her yes.

She nodded, turned to my wife, and simply said, “Good”

My wife looked confused. So did I.

Then her mother said something I'll never forget.

“If a man loses his job and stops trying, that's when you worry. If he loses his job and keeps trying, then feed him”

With that, she walked into the kitchen and started cooking.

For the rest of the afternoon, she treated me exactly the same way she always had.

She didn’t pity, she didn’t judge and didn’t give me long speeches about responsibility or finances.

What I got was a hot meal and the quiet confidence of someone who had lived long enough to know that setbacks happen.

My wife had spent months worrying about what her mother would think of me.

Meanwhile, her mother had apparently seen enough of life to understand that a person's value isn't tied to whether they're having a good year.

I found another job a few weeks later, but that's not what stayed with me.

What stayed with me was the fact that on one of the days I felt most like a failure, the person I expected to judge me the hardest didn't judge me at all.

She instead made lunch and somehow, that helped more than anything anyone could have said.

Copied.

Losing a job is hard already in a country like ours.

Make living in Nigeria easy as much as you can for your fellow Nigerian.
