BREAKING: CAMEROON'S LONGEST-SERVING NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT IS DEAD.

Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, the man who presided over Cameroon's National Assembly for an unprecedented 34 years, has passed away following a prolonged illness, close sources have confirmed to Sama TV

Born in 1940 in the Far North Region, Cavaye represented the Mayo-Sava constituency and first entered parliament in 1970. He rose to become one of the most enduring political figures on the African continent, ascending to the presidency of the National Assembly in 1992, a position he held without interruption for 34 years until March 17, 2026, when he stepped down and was replaced by Théodore Datouo.

During his decades at the helm of the lower house, Cavaye steered Cameroon's parliament through the return of multiparty politics, multiple constitutional revisions, and successive electoral cycles. He was widely regarded as a pillar of the ruling CPDM system under President Paul Biya, a man who could quietly hold the chamber together without fanfare or friction. A member of parliament for over five decades, his name became synonymous with legislative continuity in Cameroon. His reign was blasted by many.

Beyond politics, Cavaye was also a traditional figure of authority in his native Far North, commanding deep respect among his people in Mada.

He had only recently vacated his official residence in Yaoundé in April 2026, returning to his home region, a final journey, it now appears, to the land he never stopped calling home.

Cameroon has lost one of its longest shadows.

Visit of Pope Leo XIV: Exceptional Media Coverage Orchestrated by the Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic
On the occasion of the apostolic visit of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon, the Civil Cabinet of the Presidency of the Republic has taken all necessary measures to ensure optimal working conditions for both national and international journalists.
The Sovereign Pontiff is traveling with a delegation of 110 journalists from the Vatican press and major international media outlets. They are joined by a large mobilization of Cameroonian media professionals for this historic event.
Strategic Coordination
Under the leadership of the Minister, Director of the Civil Cabinet, Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, assisted by his deputy Oswald Baboke, a structured and high-performance communication system has been established. This ensures top-tier information processing and professional support for the media.
In line with this strategy, the Minister dispatched His Majesty Charles Atangana Manda as Head of Mission several days ago. He traveled to Bamenda and Douala to supervise the setup of press centers. He is currently coordinating the centers in Bamenda (Bafut) and Douala (Japoma), ensuring rigorous organizational standards on the ground.
Meanwhile, the Yaoundé press center is being coordinated by Nicolas Amayena, working in tandem with the overall framework managed by the Civil Cabinet.
Media Infrastructure: Four Key Hubs
A total of four press centers have been established to structure the media coverage:
Bafut (Bamenda): Site of the first Papal Mass.
Douala (Japoma): For the second leg of the journey.
Yaoundé (Air Base 101): For the final Mass.
Hilton Yaoundé: A strategic center serving as the operational base for international journalists.
Key Logistics: A unique feature of this itinerary is that after each leg of the apostolic journey, the Holy Father will return to Yaoundé. This allows for the efficient centralization of both media and logistical operations.
Excellence in Communication
Thanks to this meticulous planning, journalists at every stage have access to adapted infrastructure to produce, process, and broadcast information in real-time to a global audience.
This organization has been praised for its rigor and efficiency. It reflects the commitment of the Cameroonian authorities to provide this historic visit with media coverage of the highest excellence, matching its spiritual, diplomatic, and international significance.
