From Farmer to Miner: Governor Umaru Bago Honored in Russia
Governor Umaru Bago has been officially decorated by a prominent Russian academic, businessman, and campaign manager to President Vladimir Putin — who also serves as the Rector of St. Petersburg Mining University.
As part of his state visit, Governor Bago was inducted into the Global Mining Consortium — a prestigious network focused on developing subsoil mineral resources and advancing global mineral processing for the new world economy. The ceremony was held at the invitation of the Government of St. Petersburg.
This strategic collaboration with St. Petersburg Mining University aims to train a new generation of mining engineers and geologists to unlock the vast mineral wealth of Niger State. According to the university's rector, Niger State holds enough mineral resources to make its citizens 30 times richer than they are today — and potentially five times wealthier than citizens of the most developed nations.
Sahel Investment Seeks Collaboration with Niger State to Develop Zuma and Strengthen the Gold and Mineral Sector
On January 28, 2025, a delegation from Sahel Investment, led by Mr. Rani Elhilali and accompanied by Jamil, visited the Niger State Ministry of Mineral Resources to explore a potential partnership aimed at enhancing the state’s gold and mineral sector.
During the meeting, Mr. Elhilali outlined Sahel Investment’s plan to collaborate with the state in developing Zuma, a key gold-rich area. He emphasized that the company’s involvement would go beyond gold mining, positioning itself as a facilitator to attract investors for the broader development of other minerals found in the region.
A key focus of the proposed partnership is the integration of artisanal miners into structured cooperatives. Rather than displacing them, Mr. Elhilali expressed a commitment to creating safer and more sustainable working conditions. He stated, “Our goal is to empower artisanal miners, create jobs, and ensure steady employment, ultimately reducing insecurity in the state. We want to provide them with safer conditions while contributing to the state's economic growth.”
He also assured that the interests of Niger State would be protected, ensuring that all developments within the sector benefit both the local workforce and the economy. Additionally, Sahel Investment reaffirmed its dedication to environmental protection and sustainable mining practices.
The Honourable Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Alhaji Garba Sabo Yahaya, welcomed the initiative and expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. He assured Sahel Investment of the state’s willingness to work closely with them and requested a detailed profile of their initiatives to help shape the future of mining and mineral development in Niger.
