THE SILENT TENSION BETWEEN COACHES AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSTS

In my early years as a football performance analyst, I often faced tension within technical crews. Some assistant coaches felt analysts were getting too close to the head coach, taking over technical responsibilities or shouldn't be sitting on the technical bench. Even now, I still get similar stories from analysts across Nigeria and Africa.

But let’s be clear, a performance analyst is not a rival to the coach. The analyst’s job is to provide objective feedback using data, video, and evidence to help coaches make better decisions. That’s what modern football is built on, teamwork and shared intelligence.

Globally, analysts work closely with head coaches because their reports directly relate to the team’s tactical model. That doesn’t mean competition, it means collaboration for clarity.

Clubs must also begin to see the analyst as a full member of the technical crew, involved in player scouting, training analysis, match planning, team selection, and post-match reviews. Without that, you can’t build consistency or long-term development.

To my fellow analysts: stay humble and respect the coaches’ authority.
To coaches: embrace analysts as partners, not threats.

If we build unity and trust within our technical setups, Nigerian football will grow faster than we ever imagined. ⚽🇳🇬
