When I married Kelvin, everyone cautioned me about his calm demeanor and limited financial resources.

Despite their concerns, I chose to marry him, or so I thought.

In reality, I was more enamored with the concept of marriage than with Kelvin himself.

As a school teacher, Kelvin's profession differed significantly from that of my friends' husbands, who were primarily businessmen and frequent travelers. Every weekend, they would post photos of expensive dining experiences, vacations, and surprise gifts from their spouses.

I found myself drawing comparisons between my life and theirs, gradually leading to resentment.

One evening, after our landlord publicly embarrassed us over unpaid rent, I lashed out at Kelvin.

“Look at your peers!” I exclaimed. “Other women are living comfortably while I'm struggling with a man who can't provide!”

Kelvin remained silent, which irritated me further.

For months, I belittled him whenever I was angry, ridiculing his attire, salary, and aspirations. On occasion, I would deliberately ignore him for days.

However, Kelvin never retaliated with insults.

One morning, he packed a small bag before leaving for work, informing me that he had been offered a teaching opportunity abroad and would be leaving the following month.

I scoffed at the idea, but he departed nonetheless.

Three years later, Kelvin returned to Nigeria—not as the impoverished teacher I once mocked, but as the owner of an international school chain.

The same people who used to pity me now praised him.

And I?

I was no longer his wife, as he had discreetly filed for divorce before his departure.

Today, another woman is enjoying the gentle man I failed to appreciate.
