THE LEGACY OF SIM'S SARAH J. BAKKER: A LIFE POURED OUT IN LOVE

In the unfolding story of God’s love for Nigeria, the quiet, faithful service of SIM missionaries stands as a powerful testimony. Among them was Sarah Bakker—a woman whose life became a vessel of divine grace.

From 1944 to 1978, she laboured in Nigeria for 34 years, most of them spent in Mopa, capital of Mopa-Amuro Local Government Area in present-day Kogi State. Her work was not confined to one role; it was a life wholly given. She taught at the Girls’ Bible School, led as principal, cared for children in the orphanage, coordinated SIM activities across Mopa and its environs, and taught Bible Knowledge in the Government Secondary School.

Through these simple but profound acts of service, God’s love reached deep into hearts. Many young boys and girls, men and women, were led out of darkness into the light of Jesus Christ. The seeds she planted grew into lives of purpose—raising leaders who would go on to serve the Church and shape society across Nigeria.

Like many SIM missionaries before and after her, Sarah Bakker’s legacy is woven into the spiritual and moral fabric of the nation. Her life reminds us that God often builds nations not only through grand gestures, but through faithful, sacrificial obedience.

In fitting tribute to her enduring impact, a whole hall—the Sarah J. Bakker Hall—has been named in her memory at the serene Miango Rest Home in Plateau State, Nigeria, a lasting reminder of a life poured out in service to God and humanity.

Her guiding conviction was captured in her beloved memory verse: “I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”
