Accountability is the Seed of Democracy
Democracy does not begin with elections. It begins with accountability—practiced daily in homes, communities, and government.
A true democratic society is built from the ground up. It starts in the family, where parents and children learn responsibility, truthfulness, and consequences for actions. It continues in the community, where people look out for one another, honor agreements, and hold shared spaces and leaders accountable. It extends into politics, where leaders are expected to serve, and citizens are expected to stay informed and speak up.
When accountability is weak in the family, it shows up in society as dishonesty and disregard for responsibility. When it is weak in communities, it leads to neglect, silence, and misuse of shared resources. When it is weak in politics, power becomes detached from the people it is meant to serve.
But when accountability is practiced at every level—home, community, and government—it builds trust, strengthens institutions, and makes leadership a responsibility, not a privilege.
As we celebrate Democracy Day in Nigeria, we are reminded that real change is not only about who is in office, but about the culture we all uphold.
Accountability is learned at home, tested in communities, and proven in governance. That is how democracy grows.
