Dr. Sim and I talked about the idea of the strong friend, the one who checks in on everyone, shows up for everyone, and supports everyone, yet is often the last person to ask for help and the worst at receiving it.
The truth is, the strong friend needs help just as much as anyone else. Sometimes, it becomes our responsibility to make sure that friend feels safe enough to open up.
That may require doing what feels unusual. It may mean looking beyond the role they have carried for so long and recognizing that even the person everyone leans on can be struggling too. Sometimes it means asking more than just, “How are you?” Sometimes it means asking specific questions, showing real care, and making it clear that they can rely on you too.
It may take time, but it is always worth it.
