KIDNEY Diseases
Before I go into what kind of ailments affects the kidney, I thought we should get to know a bit about the organ called Kidney itself.
KIDNEYS:
These are two bean shaped Organs. Each about the size of a fist 🤛🏿. They are located just below the rib cage , one on each side of the spine, almost at the back of the body.
The major function of the Kidney is to filter the blood everyday & and produce 1-2 quarts or liters if you like, of Urine . These Urine composed of waste products & extra fluids.
It also produces hormones that affect the function of other organs e.g hormones that stimulates the production of red blood cells.
Moreso, it produces hormones that regulates the blood pressure & controls the Calcium metabolism in the body.
TYPES of KIDNEY disorders:
- Glomerulonephritis- is a diseases that causes inflammation of the Kidneys tiny filtering glomeruli . This may happen suddenly for example after a streptococcus( soar throats) . In these case, the person may get well again, however the disease may develop slowly over several years & may cause progressive loss of the Kidney function
2- Urinary tract infection: this occurs when germs enter the urinary tracts & cause symptoms such as pain or burning during urination . Moreso, frequent ruination.
These infection most often affects the bladder but can sometimes spread to the kidneys & may cause fever & back pain
3- Congenital diseases may also affect the kidneys. These usually involves some problems that occur in the development of the urinary tract, when the baby is still in the development stage in the mother’s womb.
4- High blood pressure:
Also known as Hypertension is another common cause of Kidney diseases or failure & other complications such as Strokes or Heart attack. Hypertension occurs when the force of blood against your artery walls increases. That is why, when controlled, the risk of complications like chronic kidney diseases decreases.
5- Polycystic Kidney diseases is the most common inherited kidney problems.
It is characterized by the formation of Kidney cysts that enlarged over time & may cause serious kidney damage & even Kidney failure.
6- Kidney Stones are also very common ailments of the kidney organs. They may cause severe pain in your back & side.
7- Diabetes!!! The Leading cause of Kidney failure!!!
Diabetes is a disease in which your body does not produce enough Insulin or cannot use normal amounts of Insulin properly. This results in a high Sugar level, which can cause
problems in many parts of your body
Lastly:
Drugs & Toxins can also cause Kidney problems. Especially using large amounts of over the counter pain relievers for a long time may be harmful to the kidney . Other drugs like Pesticides, Heroine & crack can also cause Kidney damages when addicted.
Symptoms
These may include:
-Nausea
- Vomiting
-Loss of appetite
- Fatigue & weakness
- Sleep disorders
-changes in how much you urinate
- decreased mental sharpness
- Muscle twitches & cramps
- Swelling of the Feet & Ankles
- Persistent itching
-Chest pains, if fluid builds up around the
lining of the heart
- shortness of breath, if fluid builds up in the lungs
- High blood pressure ( hypertension), that is difficult to control.
It’s important to know that signs & symptoms of Kidney diseases are often non specific & develop over time if kidney damage progresses slowly. These is because your Kidneys are highly adaptable and able to compensate for lost function.
When to see a Doctor!!!
Please make appointment with your Doctor if you have any signs or symptoms of Kidney diseases.
If you have a Medical condition that increases your risk of kidney diseases.
Your Doctor would likely monitor your blood pressure & kidney function with Urin & blood tests.
Proper treatment monitoring & treatment of the above mentioned diseases like Diabetes,
Glomerulonephritis, Hypertension, obstructions of the urinary tract due to conditions like kidney stones or enlarged prostate, recurrent kidney infection & Polycystic kidney diseases will go a long way to cope or reduce the risk of kidney damage.
Stop 🛑 smoking if you are a smoker!!!
If you are obese ( like me 😂), control your weight!!!
Because the kidney has the function of filtering our blood, It is also advisable to take a lot of fluid ( preferably water) every day. At least minimum of 1,5 Liters to aid this function .
Maybe it’s important to know the Risk factors !!
In a nutshell, These are people who have:
- Diabetes
-High blood pressure
- Heart & blood vessel diseases ( cardiovascular problems)
- smoking
Obesity
- family history of kidney diseases
- Abnormal kidney structure ( in born)
- Older age , with its many accompanied problems.
