That’s the shock many people woke up to. For a long time, VeryDarkMan (VDM) has used the name “Ratel” to describe his 0nline movement and d!£-hard supporters. The name grew popularity, recognition, and influence but it remained only a name in use, not a name protected by law.

Then suddenly, Blord, an Igb0 bus!πessman VDM had previously cl∆shed with 0nline, announced the launch of an app called Ratel a full bus!ness platform for buy!ng gift cards at affordable rates, funded through crypto or naira. At that moment, many people were C0nfused. Some were ∆ngry. Some said it was unfair but the law was not C0nfused at all.

Using a name loudly does not give you 0wnership.
Registering a name quietly can. All the years a name is trending 0nline mean nothing if it was never registered or trademarked. Popularity does not equal legal control.

Now, some people argued:
“But ratel is an ∆nimal. You can’t trademark an ∆nimal name.”
That argument is wr0ng.

In law, ∆nimal names can be trademarked once they are used in a distinctive way for goods or services. What matters is not whether the word exists in nature, but whether it identifies a brand in commerce.

That is how:

This is why branding without trademark pr0tection is risky. A name is not truly yours until the law recognises it as such.

So here’s the advice every creator, influencer, and business owner should take seriously. If you are building a brand, a movement, or a product around a name trademark it early.
