How Kano Became One of Africa's
Greatest Ancient Cities

In 1992, amid corruption and a brutal civil war, young soldier Valentine Strasser led a coup through the NPRC military council, becoming the world’s youngest head of state. Many saw him as a fresh hope for a broken nation, especially after the exit of President Joseph Saidu Momoh.

But leadership in a collapsing system proved far more complex. The civil war intensified, atrocities increased, and civilians bore the heaviest cost. Economic hardship deepened, and accusations of mismanagement and luxury living began to surround the regime.

By 1996, Strasser was overthrown by his own deputy, Julius Maada Bio, ending his rule just four years after it began.

Today, his story stands as a reminder: sometimes individuals rise with hope, but systems decide the outcome more than intentions ever can.

In 1900, the British demanded the sacred Golden Stool—the soul of the Ashanti Kingdom. Many feared the consequences of resisting one of the world's most powerful empires.

But Yaa Asantewaa refused to bow.

She challenged the chiefs, rallied the Ashanti people, and led the War of the Golden Stool against British forces. Though she was eventually captured and exiled, her courage became a symbol of African resistance and the determination to defend identity, culture, and freedom.
