NEW YEAR MESSAGE: HURPA CALLS FOR URGENT ELECTRIFICATION OF KWALE

As Nigerians usher in the New Year, the Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) has renewed its call for the urgent electrification of Kwale and other underserved communities.

HURPA notes with deep concern that the rising cost of running businesses without stable electricity has become unbearable, forcing many small and medium enterprises to shut down. This situation is worsening unemployment, poverty, and economic hardship in the area.

While solar energy remains an alternative, HURPA emphasizes that not every household or business can afford the high cost of solar installation. Access to public, stable electricity remains a basic necessity, not a luxury.

Speaking on behalf of the organization, the Executive Director, Comrade Ejikeme Eloka Augustine, stated that “no community can truly grow, attract investment, or sustain businesses without stable electricity.” He urged government at all levels, private investors, and community stakeholders to pool resources and take decisive action to ensure reliable power supply in Kwale.

HURPA believes that electrification is critical to economic growth, job creation, security, and improved quality of life, and calls on relevant authorities to make it a top priority in the New Year.

HURPA Condemns Cancellation of $5.27 Billion NNPC Debt, Calls for EFCC Action

The Human Rights Pathfinders Association (HURPA) strongly condemns the reported approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the cancellation of the sum of $5.27 billion in debts owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) to the Federal Government.

This decision is coming at a time when Nigeria is borrowing heavily to finance its national budget, while ordinary citizens are being burdened with increased taxes and economic hardship. It is both unjust and unacceptable for government to demand more sacrifices from the people while forgiving debts that should be recovered for public good.

HURPA notes with grave concern that these debts represent public resources, and their cancellation amounts to shielding individuals and institutions who may have mismanaged or embezzled national wealth. You cannot tax struggling citizens on one hand and, on the other, cancel debts that anti-graft agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are duty-bound to recover.

As Nigeria moves toward stricter tax enforcement from 2026, government actions must reflect fairness, accountability, and justice. Citizens cannot be compelled to comply with tax obligations when those entrusted with managing national resources are allowed to walk free without consequences.

HURPA therefore calls on:

The EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies to immediately investigate and recover all funds involved in the NNPC debt.

The Federal Government to reverse the cancellation and prioritize transparency.

Public officials found culpable to be prosecuted in accordance with the law, regardless of status.

Nigeria cannot fight corruption selectively. Justice must be equal for the governed and those who govern.

HURPA remains committed to defending the rights of Nigerians and demanding accountability in the management of public resources.
