I normally don’t jump into trending conversations like this…
But this cake conversation made me think.
And as someone who works with food and teaches food, I feel this needs balance.
Taste is personal.
What tastes amazing to one person may feel too sweet, too plain, or too ordinary to another…
And sometimes, it’s not even that it’s bad…
Sometimes the person may just not fully understand, connect with, or appreciate that taste yet.
Because what we enjoy is often shaped by what we grew up eating, what we’re exposed to, and what our palate is used to.
And that still doesn’t automatically mean the baker or vendor is bad at what they do.
A lot of these vendors have built trust over time.
People keep coming back for a reason.
Consistency. Audience understanding. Knowing what their market enjoys.
But in as much as taste differs…
As a vendor, we should still always strive to give your absolute best.
Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep perfecting your craft.
Because in food, there’s always room to grow.
And when it comes to reviewing food publicly…
I personally feel a little understanding of the craft always helps.
Not necessarily to make it…
But enough to understand what goes into it, what to look out for, and how to give feedback with clarity.
At the end of the day…
Food is art, business, experience… and also personal preference.
And sometimes context makes all the difference 💛
