The Central Mosque in Kobiti, Abeokuta
The Mosque is a landmark building in the City of Abeokuta,
Ogun State Nigeria. It was built in 1925 on the site of the very
first Mosque erected in the 1830s, on a piece of land donated
by Oba Sodeke shortly after the Egbas had settled there. The
irony is that this Islamic place of worship was designed by
Afro-Brazilian returnees based on the architecture of the
Baroque Colonial Churches in Brazil.
Abeokuta was founded around 1830 by Sodeke (Shodeke), a
hunter and leader of the Egba refugees who fled from the
disintegrating Oyo empire.
