🔥 What is Combustion?

📌Combustion simply means burning.✅

📌It happens when something like gas, kerosene, petrol, firewood or any fuel burns in air (oxygen) and gives off heat and light.

🔥 Combustion in Organic Chemistry

📌In Organic Chemistry, we mostly talk about burning hydrocarbons. These are things made from carbon (C) and hydrogen (H). For example 👇

Cooking gas (butane)
Petrol (octane)
Candle wax
Ethanol (alcohol)

🔵 Two Types of Combustion:

1️⃣ Complete Combustion (Clean burning)

📌This happens when there is plenty of air (oxygen).

📌The fuel burns completely.

The results of complete Combustion:

★Carbon dioxide (CO₂) — a gas

★Water (H₂O) — as steam

★Lots of heat

The flame is usually blue and clean. 😁

Like when gas burns properly in your stove:

> CH₄ (cooking gas) + oxyen —> CO₂ + water + heat
No smoke, just blue flame.

2️⃣ Incomplete Combustion (Dirty burning)

📌Happens when there is not enough oxygen.

📌The fuel does not burn well.

The Result of Incomplete Combustion:

★Carbon monoxide (CO) — a poisonous gas

★Or black carbon (soot) — smoke

★Less heat

The flame is yellow and smoky.

Like when your kerosene stove gives black smoke or stains your pot:

> CH₄ + little oxygen —> CO + water
or
CH₄ + very little oxygen —> black carbon (soot) + water
