Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i is a respected Nigerian academic and education reform advocate who came to national prominence when she was appointed Minister of Education on 6 April 2010. Her appointment was announced by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan during the formation of a new federal cabinet, a period that marked a renewed commitment to educational development in the country.

In this role, she worked to strengthen the state’s health systems and became known for her calm but firm administrative style.

Ruqayyatu returned fully to academia after her doctoral studies and rose through the ranks until she became a professor in 2003. Her influence in the education sector of Jigawa State continued to grow, and she was appointed Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology. In this position she confronted the persistent problem of low enrollment of girls in schools, a challenge that she often described with deep concern. She introduced policies aimed at improving discipline and concentration in schools, inclu
