ORIGIN AND MIGRATION OF OVOKO AKPỤROKWE

Ovoko’s full name is Ovoko Akpụrokwe or Ovoko Igboke named after the eponymous father and mother respectively. Akpụrokwe, the eponymous father of Ovoko, was said to have married a woman called Nne Igboke and the two lived at Nruẹtọ in the present Umuogbo-Ẹgǝ (Umuogbo-Agu) village of Elugwu-Ez’ke from whence Ovoko was said to have migrated to their present location. According to Emmanuel Ede, Akpụrokwe gave birth to three sons namely: Aroji Ogerewu, Lolo Eworo Agu and Ijike Aroji according to their order of seniority. Becase of a misunderstanding forgotten to history Akpụrokwe and his children left Nrueto and migrated to their present location. Ede further explains that by the time Akpụrokwe arrived at the present location of Ovoko, nearby communities were already settled leaving few spaces for Akpurokwe and his children to inhabit. Hence, Akpụrokwe and his children waged war against those earlier settlers, annexed their land and occupied it. ‘This made people to call Akpụrokwe a ‘taker of all’ or Ovukoru which later became known as Ovoko.
