God does not save sinners by lowering His holiness.

He does not forgive by pretending sin is smaller than it is. He does not welcome the guilty by setting aside His justice. The gospel is not God relaxing His standard. The gospel is God satisfying His own holy standard in His Son, so that sinners may be accepted without His righteousness being compromised.

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

This is the glory of the cross. God remained perfectly holy, perfectly just, and perfectly righteous, while providing for sinners what they could never produce in themselves. We did not bring holiness to God. God gave holiness to us in Christ.

“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Corinthians 1:30).
