Holidays can be stressful for even the healthiest of relationships, but new ones are particularly vulnerable to breaking under the strain. Research shows that the majority of breakups happen from mid-December to mid-February, right around Valentine's Day! So if you want to take some of the pressure off, here are a few tips to help you make it through as a couple during Breakup Season:

Be realistic about your expectations: How long have you two been together? Is it even official yet? If it hasn't been that long or you haven't yet Defined The Relationship (DTF), set your expectations low. Don't expect anyone to break the bank who isn't fully sold on you yet.

Discuss expectations: Talk with your sweetheart about what is desired or expected for this gift-giving season.

Set a budget! It's not the sexiest thing to do, but who wants to feel like they got the "cheap gift" while they splurged on the lavish one? So that no one walks away feeling cheated or unloved, agree upon a certain price point, and don't go above that!

Skip the gift exchange all together! Do something else. Plan some fun quality time together or go on a trip. Create memories instead of debt. After all, this season is about being with the one you love. Focus on that.

Have you ever had someone break up with you around the holidays? Feel free to tell me about it in the comment. It may have not had anything to do with how they felt about you. They just may have felt embarrassed about their lack of funds.
