Dry-season farming in Nigeria is a big opportunity because prices of vegetables and grains rise when rainfall is scarce. Farmers who irrigate make higher profits.
In Nigeria, the dry season (roughly November – March/April) usually comes with less rainfall, but thanks to irrigation farming (using rivers, wells, boreholes, dams, or drip irrigation), many crops can still be cultivated successfully.
Here are Crops That Grow Well in the Dry Season in Nigeria.
1. Cereals & Grains
Maize (Corn) 🌽 – Fast-maturing varieties can be grown with irrigation.
Rice 🍚 – Especially in fadama areas (low-lying river plains in Northern Nigeria).
Millet & Sorghum – Very drought-tolerant, popular in the North.
2. Vegetables (very profitable in dry season because of high demand)
Tomato 🍅 – Widely grown in Kano, Kaduna, Jos.
Pepper (Atarodo, Shombo, Tatase) 🌶 – Thrives with irrigation.
Onion 🧅 – Grown massively in Sokoto, Kebbi, Jigawa.
Okra 🌿 – Very heat-tolerant and grows well in dry season.
Cabbage & Lettuce 🥬 – Grown under irrigation in the North (Jos, Kano).
Spinach (Green Amaranth, Efo Tete) 🌱 – Common in the South.
Ugu (Fluted Pumpkin) 🍃 – Grows well with regular watering.
3. Legumes
Beans (Cowpea) 🫘 – Especially drought-resistant varieties.
Soybeans 🌿 – Grown under irrigation in some areas.
Groundnut (Peanut) 🌰 – Does well in sandy soils with controlled watering.
4. Tuber & Root Crops
Sweet Potato 🍠 – Grows well with little water.
Cassava & Yam – Can survive drought but do better when planted early dry season with irrigation.
5. Fruits
Watermelon 🍉 – A top dry-season money-maker in Northern Nigeria.
Cucumber 🥒 – Very common in dry-season irrigation farming.
Pawpaw (Papaya) 🍈 – Thrives with light irrigation.
Banana & Plantain 🍌 – Grown near rivers with continuous watering.
