The Seed That Refused to Die
Miriam wiped the sweat from her brow as she stared at her wilted yam farm. This was her third season of failure. The first year, flood destroyed everything. The second, pests ate what remained. Now, drought had turned her soil to dust.
Friends mocked her. Even her cousin, Ada, gently suggested she return to teaching.
“You’re wasting your youth chasing this dream,” they said.
But Miriam remembered her father’s words before he died: “The seed that refuses to die will one day feed a village.” At twenty-seven, she had sold her late mother’s gold to buy new seedlings and a small irrigation system she built with help from her friend, Grace.
She woke at 4 a.m. every day, carrying water in buckets when the pump failed. She mixed organic manure by hand and sang to her plants during the hottest hours. Neighbours called her mad.
Month after month, she refused to quit.
Then came the harvest. Strong, healthy yam tubers burst from the earth, bigger than any she had seen. Buyers came from neighbouring markets. Within weeks, Miriam cleared all her debts and expanded her farm.
Standing in her flourishing field, Miriam smiled through tears.
Lesson: Those who refuse to give up always succeed in the end. Resilience turns every failure into fertilizer for future victory. When you keep going long after others have quit, success eventually finds you. Never abandon your dreams in the middle of the storm.
