Beyond pay, it speaks to long-standing issues around research support, academic work conditions, autonomy, and the need for a more stable academic calendar.

This matters because instability doesn’t just disrupt semesters — it weakens teaching, stalls research, and makes meaningful international collaboration almost impossible.

If this agreement is implemented as promised, it could help Nigerian universities move from constant recovery mode to long-term planning, credibility, and sustained engagement with global partners.

As always, the real work begins with implementation.
