NDC Adopts Peter Obi as Presidential Candidate for 2027 Elections, Picks Kwankwaso as Running Mate
Abuja, Nigeria – May 31, 2026 — In a significant development in Nigeria’s opposition politics, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially ratified former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made during the party’s special national convention held in Abuja on Saturday, May 30, 2026. Obi, who was the sole aspirant to purchase the presidential nomination form, emerged as the consensus candidate after a unanimous ratification by delegates.
Party leaders, led by National Chairman Senator Seriake Dickson, presented Obi with the party flag. In his acceptance speech, Obi announced former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate, forming a South-East/North ticket aimed at bridging regional divides.
Key Pledges and Vision
While accepting the nomination, Obi pledged to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges head-on. He committed to increasing the country’s electricity generation and distribution by at least 10,000 megawatts within four years. Other priorities highlighted include addressing economic hardship, tackling insecurity, reducing youth unemployment through incentives for agriculture, manufacturing, and entertainment, and improving access to healthcare and education.
Obi described the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a partnership of equals and called for unity within the opposition to present a formidable challenge in 2027.
Background
Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party banner, recently defected to the NDC alongside Kwankwaso. The move is seen as an effort to consolidate opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other major contenders.
The NDC also reportedly zoned the presidential ticket to the South for a single term as part of internal agreements.
Reactions
Supporters have hailed the development as a potential game-changer, describing the ticket as one that combines competence, experience, and broad national appeal. Critics, however, question whether the alliance can overcome the fragmented opposition landscape that characterized the 2023 polls.
Party officials have warned against internal litigation, urging members to focus on a united campaign.
This latest realignment sets the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential race. Further details on campaign strategies and policy documents are expected in the coming weeks.

Abuja, Nigeria – May 24, 2026 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recorded a landslide victory in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primaries held across Nigeria on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The outcome positions him as the party’s strong favourite to fly its flag in the 2027 general elections.
In a direct primary process that showcased massive grassroots participation, President Tinubu defeated his sole challenger, businessman Stanley Osifo, in virtually all states where results have been declared. The president polled hundreds of thousands of votes in several states, while Osifo recorded zero or negligible votes in many areas.
Tinubu posted particularly dominant results in key states. In Rivers State, he scored 280,468 votes to Osifo’s 0. In Ogun State, he secured 322,485 votes to Osifo’s 0. Similar sweeping victories were recorded in states such as Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Akwa Ibom, Edo and Zamfara. In his home ward in Lagos, Tinubu swept with 4,996 votes.
President Tinubu personally voted at Ward E in Ikoyi, Lagos, alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. He described the process as peaceful, well-organized, and a clear demonstration of internal democracy within the APC.
Stanley Osifo has since conceded defeat and pledged full loyalty to the APC and President Tinubu. APC leaders and governors have hailed the primaries as a success, citing high turnout and party unity. The party is expected to formally present Tinubu with his Certificate of Return and the party flag in Abuja today.
