The Benin people were master artisans. They created bronze plaques, statues, and ceremonial objects of astonishing detail, often depicting the Oba (king), warriors, animals, and court life. Visitors to Benin marveled at the royal palace, a sprawling complex adorned with walls of carved ivory, brass, and wood. Its courtyards echoed with music, festivals, and ceremonies that reflected a deep cultural richness and spiritual life.
