HDR is designed to preserve detail from the brightest highlights to the deepest shadows. It works well only when your priority is 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹. If that’s not your intention, HDR often harms the natural three-dimensional tonal rendering of an image.

Technically, HDR merges a minimum of three exposures—one for highlights, one for mid-tones, and one for shadows—into a single frame that retains detail across nearly all tonal regions. But by compressing these extremes into a uniform range, HDR often 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁, 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 of the original scene.

In the end, it produces an image that 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲—a simulation of extended dynamic capability rather than the true tonal structure of the scene. That’s why you must be intentional about when you use HDR, and when you avoid it.
