In a centrifugal pump, the suction line diameter is typically larger than the discharge line diameter for several reasons:

Firstly, a larger suction line reduces friction losses by lowering the fluid velocity for a given flow rate. Lower velocity minimizes frictional resistance, ensuring a steady flow into the pump, which is crucial for efficient operation.

Secondly, a larger diameter helps avoid cavitation. Cavitation occurs when the pressure in the suction line drops below the liquid's v***r pressure, causing v***r bubbles to form. These bubbles can collapse inside the pump, causing damage and reducing performance. A larger suction line maintains higher pressure and lower velocity, reducing cavitation risk.

Thirdly, the larger diameter ensures adequate Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH), preventing cavitation by keeping the pressure at the pump inlet above the liquid’s v***r pressure. By reducing the velocity head, a larger suction line allows for a higher static head, maintaining sufficient NPSH.

Finally, a larger suction line contributes to overall pump efficiency by reducing friction losses and preventing cavitation, resulting in smoother operation and energy savings. This design approach aligns with industry standards and best practices, optimizing pump performance and reliability.
