GOVERNMENT PLEDGES BETTER WELFARE FOR MIDWIVES AT NATIONAL COMMEMORATION

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has pledged to improve the welfare, working conditions and recognition of midwives across the country.

Minister of Health, Madalitso Baloyi, made the commitment during the commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife held in Mzimba on May 5. She praised midwives for their dedication and important role in saving the lives of mothers and newborns.

Baloyi said government will invest more in training, recruitment and retention of midwives. She also promised improvements in working conditions through better infrastructure, adequate medical supplies and access to essential equipment.

The minister acknowledged that many midwives face challenges such as staff shortages, long working hours and limited resources, but continue to provide life-saving care.
During the event, the Association of Malawian Midwives awarded Baloyi an honorary midwifery certificate in recognition of her efforts.

The associationโ€™s president, Mumudelanji Keith Lipato, called for urgent action on allowances, promotions and overall welfare.
This yearโ€™s event was held under the theme โ€œOne Million More Midwives.โ€

CAMA OPPOSES RETURN OF POWER MARKET LIMITED OVER TARIFF CONCERNS

The Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has strongly opposed the re-establishment of Power Market Limited (PML), warning that the move could lead to higher electricity tariffs and worsen the economic burden on consumers.

In a press release issued on May 4, 2026, CAMA Executive Director John Kapito said the return of PML would have serious negative implications, particularly due to increased administrative costs. He noted that in 2023, a proposed 99 percent electricity tariff hike included about 30 percent attributed to PMLโ€™s administrative expenses, despite the institution showing little benefit to consumers.

CAMA also highlighted that access to electricity in Malawi remains very low, with only about 11 to 15 percent of the population connected to the grid. High electricity costs and frequent power outages have been identified as major barriers to wider access.
The association recalled that PML was previously discontinued due to its adverse impact on consumer welfare. It argued that its functions should remain under ESCOM until the power market grows significantly, especially with increased participation from independent power producers.

CAMA has since urged the government to prioritize strengthening ESCOMโ€™s efficiency instead of reintroducing PML, emphasizing the need to protect consumers from further tariff increases.
