Climate change is no longer a future threat for Malawi’s smallholder farmers — it is a lived reality. For instance, in the past two growing seasons, groundnuts yields have been on the decline resulting in high cost of groundnuts and seed. Erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, and delayed onset of rains have become defining features of recent farming seasons. It is our hope that the 2025/26 farming season will bring a smile to groundnut farmers faces. In the past 2 years, Malawi experienced recurrent El Niño–induced droughts, resulting in poor germination due to late rainfall onset, reduced pod formation, lower yields, and an increase in pests and diseases.
Groundnuts are particularly sensitive to moisture stress during flowering and pod development. Even short dry spells during critical growth stages can significantly reduce output.
One of the solutions to counter low yields is through conservation agriculture which offers practical solutions for climate adaptation. Key practices include:
✔ Minimum tillage to reduce soil disturbance
✔ Mulching to retain soil moisture
✔ Crop rotation (e.g., maize–groundnut systems)
✔ Intercropping to reduce risk
✔ Use of drought-tolerant seed varieties
Another solution is irrigation which reduces dependence on erratic rainfall and can significantly stabilize groundnut production.
Yet access to irrigation remains limited due to challenges such as high cost of irrigation equipment which is out of reach of many female farmers as well as limited land ownership rights for women.

2026 has been designated as the International Year of the Woman Farmer. It aims to raise awareness of the role of women in agrifood systems and the challenges they face, including land tenure, financial and technical constraints, and limited access to services and education. It also seeks to encourage policies and investments that empower women in agrifood systems and to promote greater synergies among international initiatives supporting women farmers.
3 Red Roses Investments is a woman-led agribusiness specialising in growing and value of addition to groundnuts (peanuts) under the brand Frances Groundnuts. Other crops include sorghum, bananas and maize. Throughout this year, we will share some of the challenges and successes of being a female farmer in Malawi.
