Sonko escaped from Shimo La Tewa Prison in 1998.

On March 12, 1998, he was convicted in two separate cases for failing to appear in court. He was sentenced to a total of 12 months in prison, with both sentences running at the same time.

After serving about one month, Sonko was taken to Coast General Hospital for treatment. On April 16, 1998, he allegedly escaped from custody.

Reports and state records say he fled to Tanzania, where he reportedly went to attend his mother’s burial.

Sonko was arrested again in late 1999 and later transferred to Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

In February 2001, the High Court reduced his sentence to the time he had already served, effectively setting him free.

The issue came up again in December 2019 when prosecutors cited his 1998 prison escape while arguing that he was a flight risk in a corruption case.
