Statement Regarding Public Transport System for Students
While recognising Malta Public Transport’s incentives to increase the number of people to use public transport, the recent uproar in reaction to Campus Hub raising their parking prices reflects a transport system that strengthens students’ dependency on private means of transport.
Currently, the public transport system does not meet students’ and staffs’ essential need for connectivity to and from the University of Malta. Despite the headache of getting personal cars to the university, the current bus schedule is deemed unusable for a significant number of students.
A bus system with infrequent buses, inconvenient routes, unreliable schedules and departing times from campus that do not reflect student hours renders it inefficient for students. This issue is only amplified during peak hours when buses are unable to meet with the influx of passengers– the time at which students would be most likely to use public transport.
Ultimately, most students opt out of using public transport immediately after obtaining their driving license in preference of a quicker more efficient system. This includes students who wish to partake in better environmental practices but deem that their transportation needs cannot be met by public transportation.
In a world where sustainability is of utmost importance, a better means of connectivity to and from the university through public transport is essential.
Following a successful collaboration in organising clean ups over the Maltese islands in commemoration of World Beach Clean-up Day, we look forward to working together and are open to engaging in discussions with all relevant stakeholders in ensuring a better and more sustainable transport system.
