In the village of Tonga Badalabougou, December traditionally marks the start of the dry season, a time when most fields lie fallow. This year, however, the landscape has undergone a radical change thanks to 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐨𝐫é, 𝐚 𝟑𝟑-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐧. While his peers waited for the next rains, Modibo’s field was brimming with a thriving corn crop, planted right in the off-season.

The driving force behind this transformation is the “𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦” model of the project “𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥-𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐳𝐞, 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐭/𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐡𝐮𝐦, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐰𝐩𝐞𝐚 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐨𝐫𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐢𝐤𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢,” ,” funded by AGRA as part of its 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝟑.𝟎 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐢.

By investing in a solar-powered irrigation system, a key technology promoted by EcoTech Mali. Modibo has overcome the main obstacle to off-season farming: 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫.

“𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫” explains Modibo. This is not just a technical feat, but an economic breakthrough. Growing corn out of season allows him to enter the market when supply is low and prices are at their highest.

Modibo’s success has sent a strong message throughout the Dioïla region. His lush fields in the middle of the dry season have become a living demonstration of what is possible.

🔹 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: Neighboring farmers, initially skeptical, now visit Modibo’s farm to learn about his methods.
🔹 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐞𝐭: This initiative has sparked a significant change in local agricultural planning. For the 2026 season, dozens of nearby farmers have already expressed their intention to adopt solar irrigation and replicate Modibo’s off-season model.

By promoting solar irrigation for high-value crops such as rice and maize, 𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐂𝐇 does more than just provide equipment; it builds climate resilience year-round. Modibo Traoré’s success demonstrates how “mother farms” can serve as catalysts for regional agricultural transformation.
