LIBERIA DEPLOYS STARLINK AT FOYA BORDER AMID NETWORK CHALLENGES

Liberia has begun deploying satellite internet at a key border point in Lofa County, following reports that security officers were relying on foreign network signals to communicate.

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) says it has installed Starlink connectivity in Sorlumba, a major crossing point in Foya District, to improve real-time communication and surveillance.

The move comes after local media reports, including OK FM, indicated that officers stationed at the border had been forced to depend on Guinean network coverage, despite ongoing tensions in the area.

LTA Chairman Clarence K. Massaquoi accompanied the installation team to the site over the weekend, in what the Authority described as an urgent intervention to strengthen border operations.

Security personnel in the area welcomed the development, saying improved internet access will enhance coordination and response time.

The LTA says it is also working with major telecom providers, Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia, to expand network coverage across underserved border regions.

Authorities say additional deployments are planned nationwide as part of efforts to close connectivity gaps in strategic areas.

The lack of reliable telecommunications infrastructure along Liberia’s borders has long been a concern, particularly for security operations and cross-border monitoring.

Officials say the latest intervention is aimed at reducing those vulnerabilities while improving national security coordination.

NEC TRANSITION: WEEDOR ASSUMES ROLE AS ACTING CHAIR AMID PUBLIC SCRUTINY

The leadership of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has officially changed hands, with Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor taking over as Acting Chairperson following a formal handover by outgoing Chair Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah.

The transition ceremony took place at NEC headquarters in Sinkor, where Madam Browne Lansanah presented a comprehensive turnover note, including financial and institutional updates. She highlighted that a General Auditing Commission (GAC) audit was successfully completed during her tenure, underscoring accountability efforts.

In her farewell remarks, she thanked President Joseph Boakai, NEC staff, and the Liberian people for their support, and pledged her continued availability to serve the country when called upon.

Taking over, Mr. Weedor described his return to NEC as a “homecoming,” committing to continuity, cooperation, and service in the national interest. He indicated that engagement with staff and implementation of key priorities will begin immediately.

The transition comes amid growing public criticism, particularly from opposition figures and civil society organizations, who have raised concerns over his nomination. Despite this, Mr. Weedor is now serving as Acting Chair pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

The Government of Sierra Leone says at least 942 of its citizens have been received at the Kambia border following ongoing operations in Guinea targeting undocumented foreign nationals.

According to a statement from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Information and Civic Education, the exercise took place in Conakry, where informal settlements were cleared and undocumented migrants identified for return.

Officials say those with valid documents were released, while others were processed for repatriation in what authorities describe as an orderly and humane process.

The Sierra Leonean government says it is working with Guinean authorities to ensure the safe return of affected citizens, while urging the public to remain calm and rely on official information.
