Anuradhapura is the cradle of Sri Lankan civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as the island's capital for over a millennium.

πŸ›οΈ Anuradhapura: The Eternal City
Founded around the 4th century BCE, Anuradhapura was the spiritual and political heart of Sri Lanka for 1,300 years. It is world-renowned for its "Hydraulic Civilization," featuring massive reservoirs and sophisticated irrigation that still function today.
πŸ’§ Kuttam Pokuna (The Twin Ponds)
These are considered one of the best specimens of ancient Sinhalese hydrological engineering and artistic architecture.
* The History: Believed to be built during the reign of King Aggabodhi I (6th century CE) for the monks of the Abhayagiri monastery.
* The Marvel: Despite being called "twins," they aren't identicalβ€”the northern pond is smaller than the southern one. They feature an advanced underground filtration system that de-silted the water before it entered the ponds.
🧘 Samadhi Buddha Statue
Regarded as one of the finest Buddha statues in the world, it depicts the Buddha in the Dhyana Mudra (posture of deep meditation).
* The History: Carved from dolomite marble in the 3rd or 4th century CE.
* The Detail: It was originally part of a shrine with four statues facing the cardinal directions. Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru famously kept a photo of this statue in his prison cell for strength and serenity.
πŸ›• Thuparamaya
This is the first stupa built in Sri Lanka after the introduction of Buddhism to the island.
* The History: Commissioned by King Devanampiya Tissa in the 3rd century BCE at the guidance of Mahinda Thero.
* The Relic: It enshrines the right collarbone of the Buddha.
* The Style: Notice the stone pillars surrounding it; they once supported a Vatadage (a circular roofed structure) that protected the stupa.
🌳 Abhayagiri Dagoba & Monastery
Once a massive international university, Abhayagiri was a rival to the Mahavihara (Great Monastery) and hosted over 5,000 monks.
* The History: Built by King Vattagamani Abhaya (Valagamba) in the 1st century BCE.
The Scale: It was one of the largest structures in the ancient world, only surpassed in height by the Pyramids of Giza
